When you need artwork, but have no source materials…
We are frequently approached by clients preparing for project approval presentations, funding presentations, and other materials to support the early stages of development. No plans, elevations or other source materials have yet been created. So, there is a legitimate need for artwork but no apparent starting point.
This is not a problem in terms of preparing renderings – in fact the process is much the same, only requiring some additional collaboration.
Scope of Work
Plans and elevations, or no, there still needs to be an explicit Scope of Work for every job. This defines the goals, tasks to be performed, intermediate approval points, and definitions of completion. Without architectural source materials, any renderings or illustrations will be created based on any or all of the following:
- Hand sketches
- Text descriptions of size, dimensions and layout
- References to existing images as style guides
Sample Images
Each key architectural feature will require some reference to guide the artists. For example, the client may provide photography, renderings or illustrations – or links to any of these online – where attention can be directed to a single point such as how the roof was done in a particular image, or how the main entrance was designed in another, or perhaps the doorways and windows in a third.
If it is possible to find references within the Architectural Art portfolio, then that is terrific but it is not necessary. Any image that contains a required key feature can be used as a model for rendering that element in the final artwork.
Building up a project from scratch
Occasionally, we are asked to collaborate on the definition of the project itself. It is possible to start from nothing more than a selected piece of land, and then;
- Discuss and define the number and arrangement of building footprints on the site. This can be based on a goal for total square feet, broken down by building and calculated to footprint dimensions.
- Sample siteplan layouts in wireframe to be reviewed, edited and approved – then rendered to a presentation quality poster or booklet size image.
- Based on the approved siteplan, a 3D computer projection of each building footprint will be developed. This gives the ability to render sample mass models from a variety of perspectives and further refine plans for the project.
- These various mass model renderings can be used by planning teams and provided as a starting point for more specific architectural planning and budgeting.
